**PAN AM CARS AT ROAD AMERICA

Plans are being made to create a run group of Pan Am cars at Road America, Elkhart Lake this summer.  We need 10 or 12 cars to make it happen.  As many of you know, Road America is one of the most beautiful, fastest road courses in the world, and the setting is spectacular.

If you would like to participate, please let me know immediately.

Any car eligible to run in the Pan Am will be eligible to participate.  Cars are subject to a safety inspection, and the driver’s should have held competition license or comparable experience.  A navigator is not required.  More details, including the likely date, will be announced soon.  Because I will be on TDY in Chicago much of this summer, I will be working hard to see this project through.

Road America hosts many outstanding events during the summer, including NASCAR Nationwide, American Lemans, SCCA National Championships, and “The Hawk,” Brian Redman’s reunion of vintage racers, one of the biggest such meets in North America.  The Hawk weekend is July 18-21.   There is also a VSCDA vintage event on September 6-8 and a 24 Hours of Lemons in November.  For more info go to http://www.roadamerica.com/calendar.asp

**CARRERAS FIESTA – MONTEREY -- AUGUST 17

The annual Carreras Fiesta, in conjunction with the Historic races at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California will be held on Saturday night, August 17, in nearby Carmel beginning at 5:00 PM.  Final plans and ticket prices will be announced soon. Please add it to your calendar now.

**PAN AM ROUTE AND PLANS -- OCTOBER 25-31

The final route for the Pan Am has not been announced, but at present the tentative route is:

--Veracruz, Oaxaca, Mexico City (!), Queretaro, Morelia, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and
Zacatecas

It is possible that speed stages will be run the first day in the hills east of Veracruz, like we did in 2006, because mid-day service is being planned in the city of Orizaba, which is also in the hill county.

San Miguel de Allende was considered as one of the overnight stops, but, sadly, the city could not come up with the necessary support package.   San Miguel still might be schedule as a mid-day service stop on the way from Morelia to Guanajuato.  According to the Mexican tourist bureau, San Miguel is now the number one tourist destination in Mexico apart from the beach towns, like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

**PAM AM ENTRIES

As of this past weekend, 71 entries were posted on the official web site:
Turismo Production (9)
Turismo Mayor (6)
Sports Minor (5)
Sports Mayor (1)
Historic A (5)
Historic A+ (9)
Historic B (8)
Historic C (23)
Original Pam Am (3)
Exhibition (2)

Some of the familiar North American driver’s names include: Robertson, Bailey, Daniels, Gussack, Hladky, Stewart, Brinkerhoff, Curry, Palthrow, Furrer, Vidal, Bazan, Stevenson, Sonner, Hampson, Lauber, Harvey, Sikes, Stephens, Gregory, Kelly, Fudge, Rogers, Ko, Shanahan, and Bledsoe.  It is significant to note that there is not one rookie in the bunch, that is, someone who has not raced in Mexico (Pan Am or Express) before.  We do have a contingent of four “rookie” couples from Australia in the event this year, however, driving Mustangs prepared by Todd Landon.

Rumor has it that Señor Ricardo Triviño, who has been racing in the WRC, is returning to the Pan Am to reprise his controversial win over Doug Mockett in 2011.

Since the entry fee now is $1000 USD more than it was in March, there’s not much incentive to sign up soon.   Entries must be submitted to the organizers via the official web site.  If you need assistance with that process please let me know.  Europeans should contact a representative on that continent.

**PAN AM RULES

The official rules for the event have not been posted, and if the past is prologue, they will not be posted until late in the summer, maybe in September.

I have been assured by the organizers that the safety rules and specs for the cars will be virtually the same as last year, with the exception of:

1.  Manual gear boxes will be allowed in OPA cars that were not available from the factory with manual transmissions, e.g., ’54 Lincolns, Chryslers, and Oldsmobiles, so the rule will be the same as that for Historic C cars – three or four speed boxes from the era.
2.  Some ‘30s roadster replicas will be allowed to run in Turismo Mayor but are limited to 305 c.i. engines.
3.  All cars must have a “X” brace over the ceiling and at least two bars, plus reinforcements or gussets, across the front doors.  Also, coupes should have a windshield brace (Toyota bar) supporting the front, top of the cage.
4.  A full set of photos of the car, including good pics of the cage, should be sent to the organizers.  This is especially true for cars that were not inspected and approved last year.
5. Cars must have both an external switch for the electrical system and a “pull” for the fire system, marked with appropriate decals  The inspectors also want to see the pull or switch for the fire system in reach of the driver and a small fire extinguisher in reach of the navigator.

**PAN AM HOTELS

If you have registered for the Pan Am, a room reservation was made for you for the nights of October 24 through October 31.   If you and your crew plan to arrive in Veracruz early, you need to make additional reservations via Monica Grossmann monica.grossmann@yahoo.com.mx.

Extra rooms for the eight nights of the race are $1280 USD.  Extra rooms in Veracruz or elsewhere along the route are $160 USD per night.

If you want the optional luxury hotel package, you also need to notify Monica.  Those rooms are $160 extra per night or $320 a night.  They sell out fast, too.

According to LCP rules, once you pay for the rooms, there is no refund for any reason and the rooms cannot be given or transferred to another person.  In other words, they revert to the organizers.

Entry fees may be partially refunded or credit may be given for the coming year, according to terms set forth in the rules.

**COYOTE CONVOY DATES

The Coyote Convoy, now in its 12th year, will roll from Laredo, Texas to San Miguel de Allende on Saturday, October 18.  It will spend two nights in San Miguel and then arrive in Veracruz on Monday.  Since cars will not be allowed into the Convention Center in Vera Cruz before Tuesday, there’s not much need to get there earlier.  Here’s the preliminary schedule:

Convoy meeting, Friday, October 17, 7:00 PM (hotel will be confirmed later)
---cross border, Saturday, October 18, 7:00 AM
---arrive in San Miguel de Allende, October 18, 5:00 PM (hotel confirmed later)
---Saturday, tour of San Miguel, cocktail party that evening
---Sunday, Pan Am car show in main square 10:00 AM-3:00 PM
---Monday convoy leaves for Veracruz 8:00 AM, arrives 5:00 PM

**MEXICAN RALLY OPPORTUNITIES

Although the Rally de Volcanes scheduled for June 1 has been canceled, there are many other opportunities to rally in Mexico.  The Rally Patrio in Morelia on September 27, for example, is an excellent opportunity tune and test for the Pan Am.  Registration is Friday and the race – two times up and down Mil Cumbres – is on Saturday.  Cost?  Only $165 and the cost of a FMAD rally B license, if you do not have one yet.

There are also stage rallies in the Valle de Bravo and Queretaro this summer, as well as the Acapulco rally after the Pan Am.

I will be leading a group down from San Miguel to Morelia and back for the Patrio Rally.  It’s only two hours south of here, freeways most of the way.  Ship your car to San Miguel, rally it on Mil Cumbres, and leave it here for the Pan Am.  Mats Hammarlund’s shop will take care of it for you.

**PAN AM CARS FOR RENT

Ford Falcon -- $29,000

Mats Hammarlund Racing has three Ford Falcons—comparable to his Mustangs—for rent at $29,000 each for the Express.  The rental fee includes full service.  Contact him at mats@mhracing.com.mx.  Cars from the Hammarlund garage have won three Pan Ams and are now on the tracks in Mexican NASCAR.

Hammarlund Racing is becoming one of the premier shops in Mexico, as its record shows.  Their service for Falcons and Mustangs, as well as Turismo Mayor Studebakers, is carefully prepared and executed.  The cars are disassembled to check each night before something breaks.  Awesome!

**PAN AM CARS FOR SALE

There seems to be a glut on the market of Pan Am cars for sale.  Why?  Some seller’s apparently want top dollar for their cars and refuse to lower the price enough.   Apparently, they don’t need the money.  On the other hand, many competitors like to build their own cars or have them constructed by a trusted shop.  I encourage people to buy existing cars, because these purpose-built cars should return to Mexico and in many cases, they are bargains, compared to the cost of building a new car.

If you have a Pan Am car for sale, please send me the details, price, and a digital photo, and I will include it in a special CARRERA NEWS next month.   A $25 contribution to the Lupita Hernandez Fund will be appreciated.  Payments may the made through PayPal.  I do not expect any commission for helping sell a car, but again, a modest contribution to Lupita would be nice.

Right now I know of the following Pan Am cars for sale:

’54 Studebaker, Carrera Champion
’54 Studebaker
’50 Ford
’54 Buick
’54 Lincoln
’64 Corvette
‘65 Mustang
544 Volvo Special, Turismo Mayor

**ISO Advertisements

Looking for a “funded” co-driver, truck driver, mechanic, and “mamacita” (party girl) for the Pan Am?  Let me know what you need.

Currently, I have a jumbo co-piloto who is looking for a ride.  And one 911 Porsche guy, Ray Stephens, who needs a slim, funded co-driver……

ISO ads and my match-making services are free.  Divorces, however, are costly.

You all know by now that road-racing in Mexico can be deadly, dangerous, and addictive.  Furthermore, I should point out that CARRERAS NEWS is a spasmodic, idiosyncratic  publication that does not represent the official views of the organizers of the Pan Am, Chihuahua Express, or any other event.

--ROAD AMERICA PAN-AM REUNION SCRATCHED

Our efforts to get a group of Pan Am cars to show up at “The Hawk with Brian Redman” at Road America on July 18-21 did not succeed, primarily because the invitation was issued too late.  Too many Pan Am cars are still in pieces, being slowly put back together for the Big Show in October.

However, another attempt will be made next year to attract these cars to Road America, so consider this the initial invitation.   By the end of the summer, detailed plans will be available.  It would be great to see a dozen of the Pan Am cars running this magnificent track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

**DATES FOR CHIHUAHUA ANNOUNCED, APRIL 4-6, 2014

The dates for next year’s Express have been tentatively set for April 4-6.  Registration will be April 2-3 and the qualifying run will be April 3.

 Registration will open in November.

**CARRERAS FIESTA, AUGUST 17

For those who plan to attend the Historic races in Monterey this summer, remember to join us at the Carreras Fiesta on Saturday night, August 17.  We usually have over a hundred people show up for these events and a dozen or so Pan Am cars or other interesting “rides.”   The show starts around 5:00 PM and continues into the evening.

The exact location has not been announced yet.  It will either be at the Baja Cantina in Carmel, as in years past, or at that proprietor’s new place in downtown Carmel.   We should know soon.

**PAN AM ROUTE

As announced previously, the overnight stops in October will be:

          Veracruz

          Oaxaca

          Mexico City

          Queretaro

          Morelia

          Guanajuato

          Aguascalientes

          Zacatecas

It seems that we will run a speed stage or two in the foothills of the mountains in Veracruz and stop for a mid-morning service in the city of Orizaba, before heading up on the central plateau toward Tehuacán and Oaxaca.

Mexico City has replaced Puebla as an overnight.   Let’s home we are not greeted by a huge rain storm, like the last time we visited the capital city.

It seems that we will not run the stage to San Joaquín, where five cars went into the ravine last year.  Instead, reportedly, we will run two laps around the Bernal area.

**PAN AM RULES

The rules for the 2013 Pan Am are posted on the official web site at http://lacarrerapanamericana.com.mx/index.php/participa/reglas.

The rules for the cars seem identical to last year.  Competitors should take the time to review them, just in case I missed something.

New cars or cars that have never been inspected at the Pan Am should apply for pre-approval by sending in a complete technical description, plus photos, including photos of the roll cage.
**PAM AM ENTRIES

As of this past weekend, 75 entries were posted on the official web site, an increase of four.  Unfortunately, two North American entries had to withdraw leaving us with 29 entries from the U.S. and Canada.

Turismo Production (8)

Turismo Mayor (8)

Sports Minor (5)

Sports Mayor (2)

Historic A (5)

Historic A+ (9)

Historic B (9)

Historic C (24)

Original Pam Am (3)

Exhibition (3)

All three Original Pan Am cars are from the U.S. and Canada:

David Buchanan and Raffi Najjarian will be back in their Chrysler, along with Christian Reichardt and Daniel Roche (Canada) in their Hot Rod Lincoln.  And the returning champions of OPA, Carson Scheller and his beautiful daughter-copilot, Lauren Scheller will be driving their ’54 Ford.

Clearly more cars are needed in OPA.  To encourage more participation, the Organizers agreed that cars that did not come from the factory with manual transmissions, like ’54 Chryslers, Lincolns, and Oldsmobiles, could install a three or four speed transmission from the era.  The event is simply too hard, it seems, on automatic transmissions.  However, this rule change and another allowing one ‘30’s street rod in Turismo Mayor with a 305 c.i. engine seem to be absent thus far from what has been posted.

There may be a category for street rods next year.  Maybe the spirit of Ak Miller’s Iron Horse, the famous “special” of 1953-1954, will be revived.

The exhibition cars include a modern V8 BMW M3 and two 911s.  Go figure.

Want to participate this year?  Rent a Falcon from Mats Hammarlund Racing mats@mhracing.com.mx or Euro-Latino Racing heyermatthias@gmail.com in San Miguel de Allende.  They may also have cars for sale.

**COYOTE CONVOY

As announced last month, the 12th annual Coyote Convoy will congregate in Laredo, Texas on Friday, October 18, 6:30 PM, at the Residence Inn del Mar, and cross the border the next morning for the 560 mile trip to San Miguel de Allende.  It will spend two nights in San Miguel, before going on to Veracruz on Monday, October 21.  A party and car show are planned for the two days in San Miguel.

**PAN AM TOUR

Rosa Mondragón, the former public relations person for the Pan Am, is offering another Pan Am Tour this year.  Rosa has a lot of experience helping family and friends of the racers, and others, such as photographers, get close to the action, as they follow the Pan Am across Mexico.

For details contact Rosa at panapinkmary@yahoo.com.mx.

**CHIHUAHUA EXPRESS, APRIL 19-21

North American and European participation in the Chihuahua Express continues to increase. Drivers from the U.S. have also signed up for the Express Rally Tour, a time/distance event, as a way to experience rally driving in Mexico.

The Express offers a great opportunity to test a new car for stage rallying in Mexico and learn the timing and scoring routine without spending two weeks and untold thousands only to find out that it’s not your cup of tea. Most track cars—modern and vintage--from the US are eligible to participate. They do not have to be “street legal” and registered for the road in the US or any other country to enter.

Worried about the bad media Mexico gets? There is ample evidence that the violence associated with the drug wars in Mexico is on the decline, perhaps because of the installation of the new president of Mexico. This fact has been determined by private intelligence analysts in the US.

In the twenty-five years of the Pan Am and the eight years of the Border Challenge-Chihuahua Express, there has not been one incident of violence toward a competitor, foreign or Mexican. That’s a good trend line! Besides, the state and city of Chihuahua mobilize around 350 police officers to secure our route. It’s awesome!

The entry fee for the Express is now $2500 USD. A registration form will be send upon request, along with a memorandum for rookies about racing the Express.

**THE EXPRESS – DAY BY DAY

The Express is three days long. Each day offers a different set of roads and different terrain.

Friday, Day #1 – leaving at 8:00 AM, the cars run north of Chihuahua City and then turn west toward the city of Madera. The cars begin with a 20 mile speed stage through the mountains that is spectacular. What a way to start to start the event! After that initial stage the cars will run several more stage through smaller mountain ranges. The race will pass through several American Amish communities along the way, too. After the service stop in Madera, the cars will race back to Chihuahua on the same roads, running the same speed stages the opposite way. This is open country, with nothing to slow your progress.

Saturday, Day #2 – the cars leave early for a long transit southwest of Chihuahua on a toll road to the city of Cuauhtemoc. Not long after that city--the only one traversed in the whole race--they line up for a series of speed runs through canyons on the way to the first service stop in San Juanito. After fueling up, the cars run speed stages to the top of the famous Copper Canyon, which is bigger than the Grand Canyon, to admire the view and have lunch. Then they run the same speed stages back down the mountain, stop for gas again, and then finish the day with more stages. It’s the longest day of the event, and it quickly separates the boys (girls) from the men (women).

Sunday, Day #3 – leaving at 9 AM, the competitors head 145 miles due east toward Presidio, Texas -- the shortest day of the event. They run a series of speed stages across the desert and across several smaller mountain ranges. A brief pause at the famous Pequis Canyon in included so crews can admire landscape closely resembling the Moon’s surface. The cars race on to stop in Ojinaga, across the Rio Grande River from Presido, for service, before returning on the same stages toward Chihuahua. Some of the stages include long, flat sections across the desert that are the fastest of the event. Some cars will reach speeds of 160-180 MPH.

The Express is a racer’s race. There is minimum ceremony and maximum driving time and public security. The roads are challenging but in excellent condition. There are only a few villages and one city along the way, and a minimum number of topes (speed bumps). After each day the short drivers’ meeting starts on time and daily awards are handed out. After the last day’s run, the final meeting includes an awards banquet. It’s a weekend event, created for busy people with limited time to race, only 240 miles from El Paso, Texas. A convoy will depart from El Paso on April 17 for the trip across the border, through in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and on down to Chihuahua.

**PAN AM DATES AND ROUTE

The announced dates for the Pan Am are October 25-31, and the starting city will be Veracruz again.

The route for 2013 includes overnights in Oaxaca, Puebla, San Miguel de Allende, Morelia, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas.

**APPROVAL OF CARS AND ROLL CAGES

All rookies or those bringing new race cars to the Express or Pan Am must submit a complete set of photos of their cars for approval, even if the vehicle has not been painted. Good photos of the entire roll cage are essential, and it may be necessary to include photos of the engine bay and the front suspension.

It’s a good idea to send the North American Coordinator or the race organizer’s office a diagram of your new roll cage before you pay some drag-car shop $4500 to weld it into your C-Jag. Send in the diagram or sketch as soon as possible.

Upon request, I can send you some detailed instructions and diagrams about how to design a cage suitable for a stage rally in Mexico.

The big difference in cage designs between Mexico and the US is the former’s requirements, based on FIA rules, that the car must have an “x” brace in the ceiling above the crew’s heads, “x” braces in the doors, and in some cars, especially bigger coupes, a “Toyota bar” (brace) by the “A” pillars. Not many US racing organization, like SCCA, NASA or even NASCAR, requires all of this. The inspectors also like to see additional bracing (gussets) around the halo or rectangle above the crew’s heads.

This extra bracing is deemed necessary in high-speed stage rallies in Mexico where cars can go off into a ravine and crash head first into a big tree or huge boulders. Thus support of the front of the cage is considered imperative. Such protection is not deemed necessary on a track in the US by larger race organizations.

For the Express, however, it is my understanding that since 2012 any cage approved by SCCA or NASA will be accepted, including cages that have support braces connected to the main roll cage by using 8 inch slip joints, grade #5 bolts, and not being welded together, per SCCA or SSCC rules. Cages for either event (Express or LCP) may be properly bolted to the floor/frame of the car, or welded in.

**PAN AM REGISTRATION

There has been no announcement about when registration for the Pan Am will open this year. Expect it to open early next month, however. No announcement has been made about the entry fee as well.

When opened, registration for returning racers and rookies will be via the Internet at www.lacarrerapanamericana.com.mx (please note the .mx at the end). To register, you will need digital photos of the faces of the driver, co-driver, and the car ready to upload. You will also need the blood type and Rh factor of the crew, plus their coat sizes. Some information about the car will be required, and you will select a class or category for your car.

Competitors who are returning to the event from the past two or three years need not pre-register this year with the North American Coordinator or pay a deposit since you are now expected to pony up the whole amount by March 1.

Registration for the Pan Am is pretty much first-come, first-serve, with no limitations on the number of entries from the US-Canada.

Please note that the rules about refunds of registration fees tend to vary somewhat from year-to-year, but one rule is consistent: once you pay for any extra hotel rooms, that money is non-refundable and the rooms cannot be transferred. Some part of the entry fee may be credited toward next year’s event, if you withdraw in time.

Ed. This is an exceptional opportunity – a solid, safe, fast car, at a rock bottom price. You cannot duplicate this car and the pride of workmanship for the asking price. Besides that, it’s really sexy. The car may be seen at the Chihuahua Express in April. Buy it now and race it at the Express. Special instruction in getting the most out of the car will be provided by the builder who will be in Chihuahua. The car has been tested on the roads and tracks in Northern California and is solid. This is the third Mexican rally car Frank has fabricated. He’s really got it right!

How about a classic from Germany (below).

’58 Mercedes 190 “Pontoon”

This classic rally car first appeared in La Carrera Panamericana in 1999. Despite flipping on its roof one day and losing it clutch near the race’s end, it finished the event. It returned to the “Pana” in 2002 and finished 4th in class, and in 2006, finished first in class and 16th overall. Since then it has only be used a few times for short rallies and hill climbs.

The four cylinder engine has been bored up to 2.5 liters. It sports 2 x 45 Webers, and has 15,000 race-kilometers since the overhaul. Disk-brakes front end, 6cm lowered body, and much more. It drives very neutral and has a really good handling now. 3.7 ratio rear axle. Axles totally renewed. The body (found originally in Portugal) is rust free, and the interior is high tech.

According to the seller, “Nobody would expect that a sedan from 1958 could compete with Alfa Bertones or Volvos P1800, but it can! It´s a rat-look-car with a high-end inside-technique.”

The seller is asking $75,000 USD for the car. Contact Thomas.Hanna@t-online.de

Ed. I raced with Thomas and his co-driver Thomas in the Carrera first in 1999, and later in 2002 and 2006. This little car was very dependable, fast, and funky.

**RACE CAR RENTALS

Why spend a bundle to build a purpose-built race car and pull together a service crew, tow truck, spare parts, etc. for a race in Mexico until you know you like it? Renting a car makes a lot of cents. Some rental cars may also be purchased, if you like them.

Datsun 510 -- $12,000

Taz Harvey, who be racing in the Chihuahua Express, has a 510 available for rent. The car is equipped the same as the 510 Taz drove to first in class and an amazing 8th overall in the 2012 LCP. The car is also available for the Pan Am for $28,000. Mechanical support is included. The rental fee does not include hotels in the Express or the entry fee in either event. Contact Taz at tazharvey8@gmail.com.

Ed. Taz and his shop know how to build fast cars, especially a Datsun 510, that is one of the best cars, maybe the best, to take the 330 curves down Mil Cumbres.

Ford Falcon -- $24,000

Mats Hammarlund Racing has three Ford Falcons—comparable to his Mustangs—for rent at $24,000 each for the Express. The rental fee includes full service. Contact him at mats@mhracing.com.mx. Cars from the Hammarlund garage have won three Pan Ams and are now on the tracks in Mexican NASCAR.

Ed. Hammarlund Racing is becoming one of the premier shops in Mexico, as its record shows. Their service for Falcons and Mustangs, as well as Turismo Mayor Studebakers, is carefully prepared and executed. The cars are disassembled to check each night before something breaks. Awesome!

**LEGAL

Any form of motor sports is dangerous and stage rally racing in Mexico is no exception. It also may become addictive.
